The sudden death of Alex Salmond is sending shockwaves across Scotland and Europe.
Scotland’s First Minister from 2007 to 2014, he has been a transformative figure in Scottish politics for over three decades.
He paved the path for independence and came very close after signing the Edinburgh Agreement, which allowed the first Scottish independence referendum to take place in 2014.
His impact on Scotland was profound and despite losing the referendum he secured his place in history and will be remembered as a forefather of Scottish independence.
From a European perspective, his story is very interesting to understand the history of the rise in the movement for Scotland’s self-determination.
We send our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to his family and to the many who mourn his early departure, including his friends in the Alba party.
As Alex Salmond wrote in 2015, “the dream shall never die”.
