Beyond Brexit: the enduring bond between Europe and Scotland

Four years ago today the United Kingdom formally left the European Union.

In these four years, all negative predictions about Brexit have already come true and Brexit has negatively impacted all parts of society, including young people who could not yet vote in 2016’s referendum but now have to face the dire consequences of this mistake of historic proportions.

Brexit was, of course, imposed on Scotland, where 62% — almost two thirds of the population — voted to stay in the EU. Support for Europe remains as strong as ever in Scotland, and in magnitude is only matched by the sadness, anger and frustration that there is no imminent prospect to finally reverse Brexit.

Amidst the dismay that so many of us rightfully feel today, we want to not just look back today but also look forward.

In 2024 the majority of the world’s population will vote in several important elections, all of which will also impact Scotland, the UK and Europe as a whole.

That’s why tonight we will be discussing with friends from several European countries how the world may change and how this may impact the deep and continuing bond between Scotland and Europe, which has endured through centuries.

Join us from 7 pm live on our YouTube channel and Facebook page and in partnership with Independence Live to hear from the director of European Alternatives Niccolò Milanese, the co-president of Volt Italia Guido Silvestri, our very own French ambassador Jane Mackinnon, journalist Jamie Mackay from Citizens Take Over Europe and Open Democracy special correspondent Adam Ramsay.

We also have an ask. Today, the European platform “We Move Europe” is promoting our open letter. So wherever you are in Europe, please consider signing the petition here and sharing the message that we Europeans would love to welcome Scotland back in the EU.
