Dear friend,
In less than two months, Europeans across the continent are heading to the polls to elect the new European Parliament. Because of Brexit, Scots – like the rest of the UK – can no longer vote in these elections. But the hope for a European future remains as strong as ever.
As is now abundantly clear, Brexit was a complete disaster that has deprived millions of their rights and opportunities, but none more so than younger generations. It is particularly for them that the injustice of Brexit needs to urgently be redressed.
For this reason, we are delighted to announce that Europe for Scotland will partner up with Young Scots for Independence in organising an international conference entitled “Our European Future”, which will be held in Stirling on May 17 and 18.
The panellists will include several members of Europe for Scotland who can not only exchange ideas with young Scots about Europe’s future but also express our joint solidarity and our common desire to allow Scotland to build its independent future within the EU. This initiative is particularly crucial at a time when there is no prospect of a UK government ready to reconsider the historical mistake of Brexit.
But the Conference on Scotland’s European Future is only one part of our broader plan to keep Scotland front of mind at the upcoming European Election.
As part of this plan, a team of Europe for Scotland Ambassadors from across Europe will work to garner support from prospective MEPs through official statements of solidarity for Scotland’s re-entry in the EU. Keeping Scotland part of the European conversation is particularly crucial in the context of the long awaited EU enlargement – a great opportunity to raise the question of Scotland’s place in the European family.
Our campaign is ambitious – and we need your help. If you’d like to get involved, there’s no better time to do so! Simply fill in this survey to let us know if, and to what extent, you would like to be part of our plan.
We are doing this for our Scottish friends, especially the youngest ones. But we’re also doing it for all of us in Europe. We strongly believe that amidst the current global turmoil and the looming threat of Trump, it is more vital than ever for Europe to uphold solidarity and democracy. Scotland’s strong democratic values, its inclusive stance on migration and humane perspective on global affairs, can help us build the better Europe we so desperately need.
With renewed energy and enthusiasm, we hope to hear from you soon so that, together, we can make a difference for our Scottish friends.
In European solidarity,
EfS team
