The democratic mandate for a new independence referendum in Scotland must be honoured

Today, Scottish First Minister John Swinney has put forward a motion to the Scottish Parliament to formally request the transfer of powers from the UK government to Scotland to allow a new independence referendum.

The motion, entitled “ambitious for Scotland”, emphasised the Scottish government commitments to eradicate child poverty, improving the National Health System and public services, build a more prosperous economy helping people struggling with the cost of living crisis and tackle climate change.

The motion also recognised that the people of Scotland have returned the largest pro-independence majority ever elected to the Scottish Parliament; calling on the UK Government to make a Section 30 order under the Scotland Act 1998 to devolve the powers to the Scottish Parliament to hold a referendum on Scottish independence.

An amendment put forward by the Green Party calling for progressive parties to work constructively and collaboratively was approved.

At last, a new request to the UK government to allow the transfer of power for a new independence referendum has been approved by a large majority of the Scottish Parliament.

Respect of democracy demands that this mandate must be honoured by the UK government.
